We live in a very creative society where we are constantly taking inspiration and stemming our ideas from others. Every person subconsciously has influences and a certain style even if they claim they don’t. Many people’s personal edge or style is reflected in their life in terms of clothing, behavior, and how they live their everyday lives.

Music is one area that influences a person’s individual style. We depict certain attributes from these artists and songs that we often subconsciously mimic. One student elaborated, “Different artists shape your personality. Bob Marley is personally very grounding to me, SZA is very relatable and Bad Bunny is very motivational.” Our favorite artists' music affects us more than people seem to notice. Music is culture, and it affects not only our experience but our expression. The clothes you wear are influenced by who you are, in terms of your morals, interests and your music taste. One student, referring to the rapper Tyler, the Creator, said, “Tyler’s outfits show his more feminine side of things because he was raised by a single mother and there is nothing wrong with being a little bold.” All these very simple things that shape a person all go into self expression and how you dress. Your style is a reflection of your lifestyle and personality.

Personally, I listen to bands like The Cure, Radiohead, and Green Day who add an element of individual quirkiness to their outfits. These artists inspire me to radiate these vibes into my creations and everyday style. I find words very powerful and I express myself through writing about my thoughts like these artists. Music opens the heart and soul, which ultimately is reflected by your outside appearance. Expressing that love for creativity into my clothing is something I consider crucial to my self expression. I incorporate this “artsy” quality in my work by highlighting specific accents such as vibrant patterns, funky jewelry, and accessories that accentuate the outfit.

Ultimately, you are a product of your interests and the culture you surround yourself with. The way you live your life shines into how you present yourself. Everyone should embrace their own unique style!
